What happened back there? Nicolas asked himself as he drove to Claire’s house. She blew his socks off. With a kiss. A few kisses. Then minutes ago she’d suggested going out at the weekend, which had to be good, had to mean she wanted more kisses. Thank goodness, because he sure as anything needed more.

Easy does it. There’d be a little girl with them so kissing was out. They’d find a way round that. Mia would get tired at the beach with swimming and building sandcastles, then they’d head home. Wouldn’t she? Fingers crossed she did.

Pulling into Claire’s drive, he turned the ignition off and turned to her. Ran a finger over her arm, tried to ignore the heat that was rushing up his arm and deep inside. But he couldn’t, so, unclicking their seat belts, he reached for her and hugged her tight. Then found her lips and began kissing her. Sinking into the heat filling his body, he knew wonder, and happiness. Something else was stirring through him too. A sense of homecoming, of having found someone who cared about what he felt.

His head shook abruptly to banish that thought. Might be reading too much into a few kisses.

‘Nicolas?’

He’d broken their kiss. But that might be for the best after those thoughts. He wasn’t ready for deep and committed. Would he ever be? He’d like to think so. He did want a future that included a loving and lovable wife, and a family. Over time the hurt of the past had gone, leaving him hollowed out, but since meeting Claire he was starting to feel whole again.

‘Should I be going inside?’

No, damn it. ‘I’m sorry. I was having a moment, that’s all.’ That was enough. His mouth covered hers before she could ask why. This was not the time to talk about his past. Not that he had a clue what constituted the right time. But now, kissing this amazing woman was all he wanted, and needed.

He kissed deeper, stroking Claire’s mouth with his tongue, blotting out everything but the taste of her, the feel of her butt under his hands. It felt as if they were in their own space, where nothing could interrupt them. Except eventually they had to get out of the four-wheel drive and walk up to the house, where his friends’ daughter waited to be driven home. His arms held Claire tighter, not wanting to let her go.

His lips brushed her cheek. ‘I’ve had the best time.’ He’d been going to say night, but there were plenty of hours left, hours that he wasn’t getting to spend with her. Unless... No. He didn’t think she’d be inviting him to come back after dropping off the babysitter. Claire kissed him like there was no tomorrow, but he already knew her better than that. She’d be cautious about inviting him to stay the night. She wouldn’t want Mia waking up and finding him in her mother’s bed when they weren’t in a serious relationship.
